Cougars excel at Brean Sands

DORSET County Under-14 Cup and League double winners Weymouth Cougars took part in one of Britain's biggest youth football festivals at Brean Sands in Somerset.

The trip was first prize in a Dorset Echo competition held in association with tournament organisers, Sports Club International (Weymouth).

Cougars got their challenge off to a great start with a fine 2-1 win over CCC (Birmingham) with Iain Webber and Samuel Charles getting their names on the

scoresheet. And Charles was again on

target in their second game against TC Tornadoes (Hampshire), which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Next came a 4-2 success over Burnbridge United (Somerset) in which Charles bagged his third goal of the festival, with their others coming from Webber (2) and Chris Emburey.

Having made it into their age group semi-final, Cougars were then paired with a very strong Eastpoint Boys outfit from Hampshire. Tom Carter scored both the Dorset's side's goals in a 2-2 draw, but the Weymouth lads bowed out of the tournament after losing the match 4-2 on penalties.

Manager Willie Gibson said: "To play five games in two and half days against very strong opposition and not lose was a great achievement for the boys.

"Their attitude, team spirit and general behaviour over the weekend was a great credit to themselves, their families, the club and Weymouth as a whole."

He added: "The festival was brilliantly organised and one of the best we've ever played in. My thanks go to Sports Club International for making it a very memorable weekend."

Cougars are now looking to add to their squad next season and anyone interesting in joining the club should contact Willie Gibson on 01305-774041.
